  • What happens in the first session?
The first session is focused on understanding you — your background, current challenges, and what you’d like to achieve through therapy. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions, get to know your psychologist, and start to build a plan for moving forward. You can watch our YouTube video explaining the process below:
  • How long does therapy usually take?
The length of therapy depends on your individual needs and goals. Some people find a few sessions helpful for a specific issue, while others engage in longer-term therapy to work through more complex or ongoing concerns. Your psychologist will discuss an initial plan with you and adjust it as needed over time.
  • What should I bring to the first session?
Just yourself. If you have any relevant documents, such as a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, previous psychological reports, or important medical information, bringing them can be helpful, but they are not essential.
  • How do I access Medicare rebates for therapy?
If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP or psychiatrist, you are eligible to receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year — 6 initially, with an additional 4 after a GP review. You can watch our YouTube video explaining the process below:
  • What if I feel like my psychologist isn’t the right fit?
Finding the right fit is important. If you feel that you’re not connecting with your psychologist, please let us know. We are more than happy to assist you in finding another practitioner within our team or guide you to a service that might suit you better.
  • Can I give my psychologist feedback?
Yes. We encourage open communication and welcome feedback at any point. Your input helps ensure therapy remains collaborative and focused on what matters most to you.
  • What does therapy for children involve? How are parents included?
At Skyline Psychology, we work closely with both children and their parents. Therapy often begins with an initial parent session to gather background information and set goals. Depending on the child’s age and needs, therapy may involve individual sessions with the child, joint sessions with parents, and regular parent updates. Our aim is to create a collaborative approach that supports the child’s wellbeing both in therapy and at home.
  • What happens in the first session?
The first session is mostly about getting to know you and your child. We focus on understanding the current concerns, gathering background information, and setting goals for therapy. It’s also a chance for you and your child to ask questions and get comfortable with the process.
  • How long does therapy usually take?
The length of therapy depends on the individual needs of the child and family. Some concerns can be addressed in a few sessions, while others may require longer-term support. Your psychologist will discuss a plan with you early in the process and review progress regularly.
  • What should we bring to the first session?
You don’t need to bring much, just yourselves. However, if you have any previous reports (such as school assessments, paediatrician letters, or relevant medical information), it can be helpful to bring those along. Also if you're planning on getting a Medicare rebate for therapy you will need a referral letter from a GP, Paediatrician, or Psychiatrist.
  • How do we access Medicare rebates for therapy?
To access a Medicare rebate, your child will need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist. Under this plan, you can claim rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year—initially 6 sessions, followed by a review with your referring doctor for an additional 4 sessions. We have a YouTube video that explains this in more detail below:
  • Can we change psychologists if it doesn’t feel like a good fit?
Absolutely. A strong therapeutic relationship is essential for effective therapy. If you feel that the connection isn’t quite right, please let us know, we will support you in finding another psychologist within our team or help guide you to another service.
  • Can I give feedback to my psychologist?
Yes, feedback is welcome and encouraged. Therapy works best when it’s a collaborative process. You are always welcome to raise any questions, concerns, or suggestions with your psychologist.
  • I’m worried that therapy might “label” my child or make them feel different.
This is a very common and understandable concern. At Skyline Psychology, we work hard to ensure therapy feels supportive, not stigmatising. We focus on building your child’s strengths, resilience, and self-confidence. Therapy is framed as a positive step toward growth, not a sign that something is “wrong.”
