What to Expect
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not quite sure what’s going on or whether therapy will help. Many people come to us feeling uncertain, overwhelmed, or simply aware that something isn’t working the way it used to. You don’t need to have the right words, a clear goal, or a diagnosis to begin.
At Skyline Psychology, the first session is not about rushing to fix everything or committing you to long-term therapy. It’s about taking the time to understand what’s been happening for you, what you’re struggling with, and what kind of support might be most helpful.
In your first session, you’ll have space to talk openly and be taken seriously. Your psychologist will listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions to help clarify what’s been going on in your life. The session has a gentle structure, but there’s no pressure to cover everything or to know exactly where the conversation should go. Many people find that even this first conversation can bring a sense of clarity, direction, and hope.
After the first session, you and your psychologist will talk about possible next steps. This might involve continuing with therapy, spacing sessions out, or considering a different type of support if that seems more appropriate. There’s no obligation to continue beyond the first appointment, and decisions are made collaboratively and at your pace.
You don’t need a diagnosis to start therapy. A GP referral can be helpful for accessing Medicare rebates, but it isn’t required to book an appointment. If you’re unsure about referrals, fees, or how the process works, our admin team is happy to talk it through with you.
Our psychologists work with adults, adolescents, children, and families who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward. This may include ongoing emotional difficulties, relationship challenges, anxiety, low mood, trauma, or concerns about a child or teenager’s wellbeing. We aim to provide thoughtful, structured support rather than quick fixes, and we work at a pace that feels right for you.
If you’d like to take the next step, you can book an appointment online or get in touch with our admin team to ask questions or talk through your options.
It’s okay to start without certainty.
Often, clarity begins with the first conversation.
